I've
decided to try something that I hope will help make it easier for us all to
keep track of all the pages relevant to each family name, and I'm going to
attempt to list individual pages here for the Hampton family so it's easy to
see at a glance everything we have in reference to them. Navigation in
the genealogy section of my website has been far less than perfect so far,
and I'm hoping this will help with that. Let me know if this makes it
easier, or more cumbersome to go through them.
Descendants
of Daniel Anderson This line of descent from Daniel Anderson covers four
generations to my great-grandfather's family. This line, however, if of my
grandfather's mother's side (Anderson) instead of his father's (Hampton) side.
Hampton
Lineage- A slightly different line begins with Nicholas Hampton, and carries
forward.
Hampton
History - This is a compilation of all obituaries and other small articles
about members of the Hampton family that have been tracked down on the Internet,
mostly.
Ben
Hampton - This is the record of an interview with Ben's daughter Phoebe,
done when he was 85 years old, as he looks back over his life. It is very
interesting!
Pearl
Hampton - This is the record of an interview done with Pearl Hampton in the
1930's, when Oklahoma's Pioneer Papers were started. In these, a
transcript of the interview was done and at a later date these were put on the
Internet. Pearl Hampton was a niece of Ben Hampton, my great-great
grandfather, and Lucinda Hampton Burk's father. Pearl's interview was done
by her son, John B. Mann, and a couple of years ago I was contacted by John, who
then put me in touch with his sister-in-law, Claudia Mann, who had some of the
information from Pearl, and the family. Claudia and her husband had moved
back to Oklahoma, to Pearl's ranch, to help take care of her when she got older,
and lived with her for the next 10 years before she died. They are still
living there, and have sent me some great photos of their family and other
information in their possession. Claudia made a copy of Pearl's line of
descent that Pearl had done, and sent that to me, too, and I will get that up
and post it on here, also.
I haven't
compared it yet to these lines that we already have up. If they all blend
well I will add her information to the line as is. If not, I'll have to
see where the discrepancies lie, and why, which may be the case, because Pearl
goes back further, and takes in several other lines of descent. I hope to
get the bare bones of it online with this update, and then do further research
on them. It's quite interesting.
Note: This Hampton line holds one of
the great mysteries of our family. I will tell you what family verbal
history declares:
My
great-grandmother, Lucinda Hampton Burks, said that her mother was Charlotte
Folsom Hampton, and her father was Ben Hampton. There are two documents,
the Choctaw Rolls on which they are listed as parents, and the census, written
by hand, to support that.
She said that her
mother died very young, when she was just a few years old. Her father, Ben
Hampton, took her to an unmarried sister of Charlotte's, Sarah Folsom, and told
her he could not care for the child, and he asked her to take her. Lucinda
did not see him again until she was 18 years old, when he came to see her.
By this time she was bitter because he had not come sooner, and refused to see
him. He never came again. Later in life she planned to see him
again, but he died before she was able to do that. There are no birth
records for Lucinda, no marriage records have been found for Charlotte and Ben,
and he does not mention her, or Lucinda, in anything we've found published, so
far. Shortly after, Ben remarried and had several other children,
including another daughter, Phoebe. It may be that they married in a
Choctaw marriage, or were married where there were no records made, or he may
have destroyed the records after her death... or, they may not have had a formal
marriage. We simply don't know. If anyone out there has any records
that could clear up this mystery, however, please contact me.
